Schoolcraft woman accused of embezzling over $100,000 from doctor’s office

VICKSBURG, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A Schoolcraft woman is accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from the doctor’s office where she worked.

Police say that Sarah Hazell-Barker used a company credit card for three years at the expense of a small doctor’s office in Vicksburg. She now faces 20 years in prison.

Hazell-Barker worked at Family Doctors of Vicksburg for 16 years, for the last six of those she was entrusted as the office manager.

Vicksburg Police say they started investigating her transactions after getting a call from one of the doctors at the office.

“She used a company credit card for her own personal use and she embezzled approximately over $110,000 from the company,” read an officer at her probable cause hearing.

Police say Hazell-Barker was immediately terminated from her job and turned herself in last week.

Hazell-Barker is currently out on bond. Newschannel 3 reached her by phone on Wednesday and she said she had no comment on the case.

The doctor’s office did not want to address the charges on camera, but issued the following statement;

“Family Doctors of Vicksburg has always focused on the unique partnership we have with our patients and community. This has been a sad, difficult and disappointing experience for us. We will not comment on any specifics of the case as the legal process needs to play out. There has been no compromise of patient data and this has not affected our patient care. We have made procedural changes to make sure that this does not happen again. Our service and ongoing commitment to our patients and community remains our first priority.”
