Family charged with stealing $2M from dental practice (VIDEO)
Police say a Lawrenceville woman who worked for 18 years at a dental practice in Sandy Springs embezzled more than $2 million from her employer when she paid herself $800,000, doled out $683,000 to her husband and daughter who didn’t work there, and racked up expenses on the company’s credit cards.
Rosemary Dsouza, who was the business manager at Dental TLC on Hilderbrand Drive, is charged with theft by taking and financial transaction card fraud. Her husband, Joseph Dsouza, and daughter, Karen Dsouza, are charged with theft by taking, reports Atlanta Business Chronicle broadcast partner WXIA-TV.
Dr. Roger Abbott who runs the dental practice, called police when he noticed the practice wasn’t making the money he thought it should be based on growing business, WXIA reports.“It would be time to give raises or buy equipment and I’m having to take loans or put off raises for some of our most important people,” Abbott told the station.
Sandy Springs Captain Steve Rose said Abbott became suspicious after Dsouza mentioned owning two homes in Florida. Rose said owning the homes seemed “a little unreal based on her salary.”
Abbott said he placed his trust in Dsouza and thought of her like family. “She was like an aunty to my kids,” he said. “I’ve had hundreds of pictures of me at her family events and she at mine.”
He said he learned a hard lesson and is making changes. “It’s my responsibility to put the systems in place so I don’t tempt anyone again,” Abbott said.
